In brief
Ultrasound in pregnancy is not a way to get a nice photo but a tool with specific tasks. Its purpose is not only to assess fetal anatomy: at different stages it has different indications.
Prenatal screening is a separate programme with strictly fixed timings, whose main purpose is to assess fetal anatomy and the risk of chromosomal abnormalities. GMS does not perform obstetric prenatal screening. We perform ultrasound scans at different stages of pregnancy — based on indications determined by your doctor.
The first scan confirms that the gestational sac is located in the uterus, and establishes the heartbeat and gestational age. Early diagnosis of an ectopic pregnancy is a task where ultrasound saves lives. At GMS an early pregnancy scan, including confirmation of pregnancy, is AED 600.
Gestational age and the condition of the fetus and uterus are assessed. A first trimester ultrasound is AED 1,100.
The development and size of the fetus, its position, the condition of the placenta and the amount of amniotic fluid are assessed, with Doppler assessment of blood flow where indicated. The reasons for a scan vary: not only fetal anatomy, but also monitoring of growth, position and the condition of the placenta. A fetal ultrasound in the second and third trimester is AED 1,100.
Measuring the length of the cervix by the transvaginal approach is a separate procedure, usually in the second trimester. A shortened cervix is a significant predictor of preterm birth, and detecting it allows timely intervention. At GMS cervical length measurement is AED 500.
Measurement of the fetus and assessment of its estimated weight. The aim is to make sure the fetus is growing in line with gestational age. Fetal biometry is AED 1,100.
A three-dimensional image is not entertainment or a "nice photo", as is commonly thought. 3D primarily makes it possible to assess malformations that are difficult to diagnose in the standard two-dimensional mode. A 3D/4D ultrasound at GMS is AED 1,100; fetal sex determination is AED 500.
No special preparation is usually required. Wear comfortable clothing and bring the results of previous scans — the doctor needs to see the growth trajectory, not a single point.
At GMS pregnancy ultrasound scans are performed by a diagnostic ultrasound specialist, PhD, and reports are issued in English. Appointments are held in Russian and English.
